Yes- today is the day- the day that every 3 or 4 months I get the dreaded hiccups. and I don’t know about you- but when I get them they last ALL DAY!!! I can get rid of them for an hour or so, but then they come back with a vengence and I’m back to looking stupid every 10 seconds they happen.
You know whats really annoying is trying to laugh at something and surpress a hiccup at the same time. this attempt happened earlier when I tried to read BG’s new blog…which has some funny comics in it btw…..but I wasn’t able to surpress the hiccup and ended up sounding like I swallowed woody the woodpecker.
So this ultimately led to further investigation in hiccups. but since I don’t have time to do the full medical research on hiccups like doctors and other smart type people do (and I’m still waiting on Mike King to let me go on sebatical to study the healing powers of icing in tropical climates). I turned to our favorite source of quick facts- wikipedia! and this is what I learned….
TALKING TOO LONG CAUSES HICCUPS!
along with eating too quickly, being hungry for long, taking a cold drink while eating a hot meal, burping, eating very hot or spicy food, laughing vigorously or coughing, crying out loud (sobbing causes air to enter the stomach), electrolyte imbalance, and clearing the throat.
I can promise you I did not get the hiccups from talking to long….I keep my breaks to a minute! maybe I just need to bulk up on gatorade and tell Mike to stop making me cry….
OK- not DIRECTLY from kermit the frog- I just wanted an excuse to put him in my blog….
but they do come from frogs according to this statement in wikipedia…
“Christian Straus and co-workers at the Respiratory Research Group, University of Calgary, Canada, propose that the hiccup is an evolutionary remnant of earlier amphibian respiration; amphibians such as frogs gulp air and water via a rather simple motor reflex akin to mammalian hiccuping.[1] In support of this idea, they observe that the motor pathways that enable hiccuping form early during fetal development, before the motor pathways that enable normal lung ventilation form; thus according to recapitulation theory the hiccup is evolutionarily antecedent to modern lung respiration. “
So some fun and interesting facts were learned by me (bad english alert!!! hehe) but what wikipedia lacks is THE CURES!!!! thanks for the facts- but I want to know how to cure it!!!!
I’ve tried everything! I think I know every trick in the book. here is everything I’ve tried in my lifetime:
-holding breath for 10 seconds- nope….I’ll be doing this and I’ll still get a hiccup.
-being scared-I would rather not be scared. this is more fun for the scare-er. I’m gullible enough kids!
-spoonful of sugar- my most favorite remedy especially as a kid because I got to eat sugar! still doesn’t work though- it can hold them off though for a while
-spoonful of peanut butter- this one I used today! thanks to Brittany Gray and her jar of jif! luckily it kept them away long enough for me to do my show. they sadly came back afterwards. stink!!
-drinking out of a glass backwards- effective for an hour, but very messy and unattractive.
-taking 10 deep breaths as deep and as fast as you can- this one my 6th grade teacher told us. sometimes it works- but 100% of the time you just feel like you are going to pass out.
So there you have it. every remedy I know of. If YOU know of any that I haven’t tried- leave them in my comments! I would love to add some more to my arsenal!
by the way- I’ve had the hiccups two separate times while writing this blog….it’s crazy!
Alright- enought with the hiccups. before I sign off though- two things….
GO SEE THE DARK KNIGHT!! IT’S AMAZING!! WOWEOWOW WOW! Heath Ledger is amazing and totally deserves a posthumous oscar nomination.
And if it’s sold out…I suggest renting “Across The Universe” if you don’t mind musicals and have an appreciation for The Beatles. (Super Beatles fans may be offended, but if you have an open mind for their interpretations of the songs then you should be ok) If anything- watch it for my new celebrity crush Jim Sturgess.
Jim- You had me at “Something”. If you are looking for a singing gig please look me up. I could use someone to serenade me to sleep every night. Along with something beautiful to look at while I work. In return I will be your puddle of goo for forever. Love, Sara Beth
(Sorry Nikki G I stole your open letter gig- but thought it was appropriate!)
ALright gotta run! Have a wonderful week! be sure to check out the ducks at the Jackson County Fair!
Keep it Rockin!
Sara Beth
