“Caved in” to Catan…

6 08 2009

Yes folks….as of last night…I am no longer a Settlers of Catan virgin. I played my first game of Settlers last night.

Now to most of you- this seems to be no big deal. However to a few of you (you know who you are Dan Nick Josh Tom Ashley Rachel Laura) this will come as a shock because I have for so long REFUSED to play this game. I heard it was similar to RISK and that game just makes me want to curl up in a ball and cry.

Plus it became one of those things where if you didn’t jump the bandwagon then you became this mysterious person with unique ideals…you know what I mean…those people that still refuse to get a cell phone, text, join facebook…they all seem to have some crazy reason that they don’t do those things… even though most of their reasons is “I don’t want to cave in and get addicted” which in turn puts them in a bandwagon-like group of people with sassy ideals….just sayin :)

So anyways- after playing this supposedly addicted game, I feel the need to devote some random thoughts/critiques to the game as one who is not insanely deep into the game like others (once again…you know who you are).

- Kudos to the designer who came up with the board. I like how it changes everytime you play…but as a first timer I stared at that board thinking it was some abstract art piece. And I kept getting the greens mixed up in my mind.

-Whoever decided on the “elements” to barter back and forth in order to get settlements/roads/cities and such was a very perverted man. I’ve never had so many “that’s what she said” or “that’s what he said” moments go through my mind. I seriously giggled for the first 45 minutes of the game.

- How can you have the largest army with only 3 soldiers? hello! you need way more than that :) (dumb blonde moment sorry)

- So why hasn’t anyone else capitalized on this game? I’m envisioning a Settlers of Columbus where you have to build architectural wonders out of corn and soybeans…. or Shoppers of Catan which is a mall with designers and escalators? Just saying there’s a lot of potential for those types of spinoffs.  PS I get credit for either of those ideas…and the second one is mainly because I never could get enough of the game Mall Madness.

- the 7 roll rule is stupid. It always happened when I had over 7 cards in my hand and had all these plans to trade in all 7 of my wheats to build one road and it would screw me over.

- the “robber” should be either a mythical dragon or a natural cause….or even something environmentally nasty like an Oldsmobile Delta 88 (thanks Mike!) the black blob isn’t so scary to me.

So all in all…it’s not that bad of a game. I enjoyed playing it last night. HOWEVER…I REFUSE….

I repeat… REFUSE….

To let this game take over my life like it has done with so many of my friends….

-I do not need to own this game. Nor all the extention packs that go along with it.

-I will not sit in my room on Saturday night contemplating strategery all hours of the night…

-I will not look at loaves of bread in walmart and think if I had three rocks I can upgrade my settlement to a city….

-I will not take bricks to the fair and barter with the 4H folk for a sheep…

- and when I see a hexagon I will think “what a nice 6 sided shape” and not “I can build a road here to get to a port!”

So there ya go. My take on Settlers of Catan….whatever it’s worth…. (and if you immediately thought wood, rock or brick you are seriously a Catan addict)

In Other News…

When you are sick of thinking check out Flight of the Conchords if you haven’t done so already! I do not get HBO so I have to wait until their TV shows are on DVD- and even then I usually don’t watch them unless a friend thinks highly of it and I have to check it out for myself. So this is me being a friend to you saying go check out this show! It’s hilarious….

Hope your week and weekend is awesome! Keep It Rockin!

Yeah Yeah Yeah….

29 07 2009

I know- I haven’t blogged in ages…but I got the usual excuses to back me up I promise- things extra crazy at work, vacations, conferences, your face, my dog ate my cheese-its….you know, the usual stuff. Plus I haven’t noticed anything crazy in the fashion world recently so it makes for a dull blog for SB when people dress normal.

So I’ve recently have come to the conclusion that yahoo.com has a staff that is not all there upstairs. True, they have a great email/web interface and all that stuff- what I’m concerned about is their staff and who they have making the decisions to post certain articles….(and fashion choices too for that matter…but see earlier blogs for that arguement)

case in point….this article here was in their featured section:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20090728/sc_afp/sciencearmsoffbeat

There it is folks- an article about the “mystery of swinging arms while walking”!

REALLY?

REALLY?

Did people really wonder about this? Was this the 8th wonder of the world that I apparently didn’t know anything about? If so- I would like to say thank you to the world for leaving me out of the loop.

But really? People spent oodles of moolah on this study? WHY? Now I’m no physics geek (my friends, family, and High School Physics teacher Mrs. Settle could tell you that) but common sense tells me that the reason you swing your arms while walking is for balance purposes. true it’s not as dire to swing your arms while walking like you need your big toe to balance, but it obviously keeps your body in some form of equilibrium (if that makes sense) when you swing your arms when walking.

It’s NATURAL! Plus it enhances a designer’s work when a model swings her arms on the runway, turns a brisk walk into a more complete body workout…and if you don’t swing your arms, you end up looking like Elaine’s Co-worker with Dead arms from the “Summer of George” episode of Seinfeld.

here’s the best part of the article…the intro!!! and I shall quote below:

“Swinging one’s arms comes at a cost. We need muscles to do it, and we need to provide energy in the form of food for those muscles. So what’s the advantage?

Little or none, some experts have said, contending that arm-swinging, like our appendix, is an evolutionary relic from when we used to go about on all fours.”

First line…OK- are we really that lazy of a society that worries about how arm swinging uses up our energy and burns calories?? Is someone really thinking “oh dang I moved my arm- so only 580 calories that I consumed at Burger King will be going to my spare tire instead of the full 600! oh no!!” good night people…and to the author of this article…please go back to college and learn how to write a better into to your thesis statement because that just made you sound dumb.

and the second line… once again really??? an evolutionary relic? Now I don’t mean to get into an evolution vs creation arguement (in which I side on creation in case you were wondering… :) ) but anyone…creationist or non-creationist… that has taken 15 minutes to look into evolution theories relizes that they make as much sense as a bathtub full of paperclips. yeah- not much use there! and obviously these so called experts skipped that day in elementary Gym class where they had to the bear crawl (walking on all fours) across the floor…it’s VERY un natural and to make that assumption that we ever did that is crazy.

So as the rest of the article goes…it’s pretty much your typical “research has found bla bla bla” stuff. So thank you researchers from U of M for all your hard work….but now lets focus on something like curing cancer or AIDs. I think I can speak for the alums of that institution that they would rather see their donations go towards something like that rather than arm swinging.

WOW! So I didn’t mean for this to turn into a crazy rant…but it did. oops! I just wanted to share a “what were they thinking?” moment with yall! hey- at least I posted something new for yall to read!

Have a great week! Until next time I blog…. (which may be another 6 months…haha)

Keep It Rockin!

Holla from New York State!

21 04 2009

yeah yeah- I know it’s late- but you know what? I dont care! wanna know why? I’m on vacation!! YAY!!

OK- so its not the glamorous sandy beach vacation that you think of immediately, but it’s still time off from work…I’m back in the land of the true Yankees… (I say this because while I went to school in East TN I learned that according to them even hoosiers are considered Yankees because we are above the Mason Dixon line….this was odd to me of course, but I aint knockin it)

But yes- I guess you can call this a family vacation….when time you take off for those big events like weddings and graduations and family reunions….and though you know they may not take place in the idealic location of your choice, you know you are still going to have a blast because it’s a chance to reconnect with your family and friends that should be your family. That would be this week for me. this past weekend I got to see my grandma, aunt and cousin in Syracuse/Cazenovia area and this week I get to be a bridesmaid in my bestest/longest friends wedding (seriously, we’ve known each other since we were potty trained!).

PS- kudos to Alona frankel and other authors who have gone into that messy subject with bravery and a silly spirit! they deserve their own award :)

OK- I digress…

So I guess my purpose of this blog is to share things that I’ve learned/observed so far in my time away from not having to think about work…kinda like that one sunscreen song that came out in 99? I know I’m not as cool as Baz Lurmann…but I thought some things are worth sharing…

-when on a road trip- don’t ever play the ABC game by yourself. yes you may win all the time, but you catch yourself cheating a lot and making up your own rules halfway through the alphabet. and sidenote to businesses that deal with travelers, please use the letters j,q,z, k, and y more often. and thank goodness for the flying J!

- next time you are driving through Ohio, count how many blue and white ohio barns there are. it’s quite a few.

-there are horn-ed cows in Ohio! for realsies along i71 before Columbus! (I know they are called steer/long horns but the suburbia kid in me really doesn’t know that)

ok- enough with Ohio…I’ll move on…

- I don’t care how crazy your family is, be sure you take time out of your busy life and spend time with them. It has been 3 years since I last saw my grandma and I still kick myself to this day for letting the excuse of “I’m too busy at work” get the best of me. So if you are lucky enough to have family close by… take the time to appreciate it, because you really don’t know how lucky you are.

funny pictures of cats with captions
see more Lolcats and funny pictures

- windmills are the coolest ever!!! theyre all over the ridgelines in Morrisville, NY grabbing the winds from Lake Ontario/fingerlakes and converting it into awesome windpower energy! I think there are some in Northern IN, so if you get a chance seriously go check them out and do whatever you can to support these projects for greener energy! it’s so cool to see this technology in action!

 real pics to come later!

-turkeys=hilariousness. we were driving from Morrisville back to Cazenovia and there was a turkey crossing the road ahead, we luckily slowed down and slightly swerved enough to miss it (Victoria we saved one to make up for you killing one the other day haha). then I looked back to watch it finish crossing the road and it took a dump! I think we litterally scared the crap out of a turkey!

-respect your elders. yeah I know Baz Luhrmann says this too…but it hit me hard this weekend. I won’t get into how it did…you can ask me that privately if you know me. all I ask of my generation is to learn from our elder’s triumphs and mistakes, and stop being so selfish overall.

- when packing- set out everything you think you need…then cut it in half. I’m still trying to learn this one…it has yet to sink in….haha!

- and finally- nostalgia is one of the most interesting double edged emotions you can feel. the longer you are away from a place the more idealic/dreamlike it becomes. Then to have that dream become reality yet again is always a shock, especially with your childhood home…the house you grew up in always shrinks, the landscape always changes, your favorite pancake place is gone, your old church isn’t as huge as you thought it was, and the theater that was brand new when you left looks so old you wonder what happened. Plus when you drive down your old street and see 6 houses with christmas lights still hanging from the porch it hits you that you can find a little bit of “country” wherever you go :) .

Welp thats all I have so far, I’m sure more will come…like how horrible it is to stay up till 3am to write a blog…but hey- I was updating facebook and twitter, I might as well not leave yall hangin!

and yes- I’m on twitter now….still working out the kinks on that one. you can follow me at sarabeth3283! although I get frustrated with the 140 character limit…so don’t think I’ll be dropping this anytime soon…:)

have an awesome week! I heard the weather has been nasty there, and guess what it’s nasty here too so don’t be too jealous…its even worse when you are staying on a lake that can be so much fun when its warm with a jetski or a boat but no one is even out on it yet because it’s too cold. (once again that nostalgia is kickin in :)

Keep it Rockin yall!

Sara Beth :)

I was a UNC fan for 15 minutes…

10 04 2009

Hey-yo everyone!

Sorry I haven’t shared my crazy thoughts in a while- things get super crazy around here for me when a certain someone who’s name starts with a D and rhymes with wave goes of vacation for eternity. So now that he’s back I acutally have a couple moments to update this thing….

and since it’s been a while- this is going to be a random blog! yay!

First off- thanks to everyone who keeps coming back to check my blog! Ever since my last fashion blog yall my hits have increased to more than 20 people! yay! So whether it really is a whole bunch of new people or the same 20 people that keep checking back on different computers….thanks for boosting my confidence…you like me!

So the March Madness is over…and that is always sad times….but guess what? I had UNC in the draw 4 pool at work and I won! SWEET! This is the first year I have won first place. And I know some people here think that I have rigged this pool every year because I have won at least $10 every year I’ve been here. Alas….I do not. It’s the luck of the draw, so there!

logo-university-of-north-carolina130220085330

Unfortunately my pickem all the way bracket suffered an untimely death due to internal bleeding…but thats what happens when your favorite team gets in the big dance. (Syracuse I still love you…)

I will say though… I get frustrated at the end of basketball season…when everyone gets all excited about baseball starting up. Don’t get me wrong, I am a happy girl when I get to spend an evening or an afternoon at the ballpark eating peanuts and ice cream out of a hat….

but hello??? WHAT ABOUT HOCKEY??? Stanley Cup playoff season is almost here! And honestly it’s still way too cold to be sitting outside watching baseball so wouldn’t you rather be inside glued to the TV watching hockey boys get beat up fighting for the Cup? I would! And if you couldnt get enough of the thrill of a championship game switch over to hockey! this is the best time to get into it! (this was a message brought to you by the IRFSH foundation…which stands for Indiana Residents For the Sport of Hockey)

nhl_logo

On to greater things- I’m sure you heard by now that our downstairs team won our office’s fitness challenge! yay! BIG thanks to Tipton Lakes Athletic Club and Ian for helping us out with that! It really is a fun program and if you feel your office is a bit on the unhealthy side its a great way to kickstart good habits!

I just wish that Ian could take away all the temptations around me though….so the other day I was going through the DQ drive thru to pick up the ice cream cake for the office party… and there it was- not one but two posters for what looked like the most glorious sundae creations known to man! First- their new blizzard is Midnight Truffle…and anyone who knows me knows dark chocolate is my weakness…and in truffle form I can’t resist. THEN- next to this glorious creation is their new wafflebowl sundae called nuts and fudge….hot fudge, peanut butter sauce and peanuts!! aaahhh! and those that really know me know that the peanut butter/chocolate combination is up there right next to the dark chocolate obsession!

And so last night after Maundy Thursday service…the fam and I went to DQ and I had one of those amazing sundaes….and yes they totally lived up to their potential amazingness. so go try one! (PS- I have been making this sundae since I was 6- and they finally put it on the menu! way to wise up DQ!)

wafflebowlsundae-q107_xlrg

(nom nom nom nom :) )

Let see what else….Movies? ok we can talk about that- go rent Slumdog Millionare if you haven’t seen it yet! It was definitely deserving of all their awards! The beginning is a little rough to watch…I never had an interest to go to India and within the first 45 minutes I was asking my good friend Christi when we are going to India to adopt all the children… yeah that’s right we plan on outdoing the Octo-Mom! haha just kidding I PROMISE!

slumdogmillionaire

Don’t go see Adventureland though. It’s wierd- but not in the good way. Kristen Stewart once again can’t act. Whoever told her biting her lip, playing with her hair and scoffing every 2 seconds was called acting needs to be slapped. I’ve started a study into her work to see why she is still working in hollywood. I’m sure my research will be posted in a blog soon!

adventureland2

Welp- that’s all I have for now. Hope everyone has an awesome easter weekend! And tell your kids to be nice and share with others at the easter egg hunts tomorrow…it will make an easier day for everyone!

Have a great weekend! Keep it Rockin!

SBC’s School of Bracketology 101

16 03 2009

Oh it’s that time of year again! I love March Madness! I do love college basketball. It’s a passion that started when I became a cheerleader at good Ol’ Milligan College and I fell in love with the excitement and thrill that comes with watching basketball. Sure we never made it to the Big Dance, but it was enough to get me hooked onto March Madness.

milligan20college20logo

And I will also admit- I am a horrible college basketball fan throughout the season because there always seems to be something else more important, so I usually end up making up for lost time and become a psychosuper fan for the next couple weeks.

fan

ANYWAYS- enough with reminiscing…back to what’s important….your bracket! I’m sure theres plenty of buzz going around the water coolers about office pools and bracketology…who’s the cinderella story and who’s the dark horse….who’s your elite 8 and your upsets? I’m always amazed at the scruitiny and analyzing that goes on during this time!

over_thinking

However- you shouldn’t let the over-analytical thinking get you down and discourage you from entering a bracket into the office pool! They are so much fun! And the best thing about it is everyone has an equal chance once the games start….and usually the guy that was bragging about his stellar picks ends up with the bleeding bracket. If anything- that is worth entering the pool for!

pool

So over the years I have come up with my own way of making my bracket picks…and I don’t mean to sound like that one guy by the watercooler, but I have held my own when it comes to the office pool! I have won at least 10 bucks every year for the past 3 years! And the best thing….my methods have NOTHING to do with stats!

So this year- I thought it might be nice to share some of my theories and methods when it comes to bracketology. Sure I maybe jinxing myself, but I’m more than ok with the thought of passing along the knowledge to those that don’t know.

(Disclaimer: if you are a true sports fan, from here on out this blog may make you cry. continue at your own risk)

SBC’s BRACKETOLOGY 101:

- go with your gut- write your choices in PEN! I know! I’m going against every grade school teacher’s philosophy that I had when I say that, but it’s true. Overthinking causes doubt and leads to those “ARGH! why didn’t I go with my gut?” moments that we all hate. AND it also saves you from those cheaters who write their choices softly and half erase them and try to say “oh well I had that down!” Facebook also has a fun bracket application that you can use and will lock in your choices by thursday.

- it is OK to fill out many brackets! – when Syracuse or UK are in the Dance, I fill out two- one as my dream bracket- with one of those said teams going all the way to win. The second one being more realistic and thoughtful with my choices. though you can only turn in one bracket per pool….it’s fun to have several to follow and keeps you into the tournament longer. This year’s case….I will have two because SYRACUSE is a 3 seed!!!! holla!

-be sure to allow some upsets- I know I said earlier I don’t go by stats- but the little tiny numbers are sometimes smart to go by in the first couple rounds. Your 8&9, 5&12, 7&10 and 6&11 games are going to be where most of the upsets happen….so be sure you allow a couple of those….1 for each region maybe? and the best way to choose these is to base your decision on:

  • school location – would you rather vacay in Cali or Maryland? or did you have a bad experience with some cheese in Wisconsin?
  • school mascot – if those two mascots were in a fight for realsies…who would win? (PS- worst school mascot is Alabama – the Crimson Tide…. it’s discrimination against women even though you really shouldn’t mess with us during that time of the month….)
  • school popularity – have you even heard of said school? I will admit I didn’t know who VCU was when I first looked and that did influence my decision. and I did choose Cornell for a 3/14 upset just because Andy Bernard is a Cornell alum…

because really…..they’re gonna be some upsets…so you may as well base your decision on silly reasons.

- the coolest names are always the safest bets!- Who can’t love a school called GONZAGA!! Seriously- part of me wants to go get a second degree from there and become important enough to change their mascot to GONZO! Marquette and Villanova are always fun names too….and you never hear of Wake Forest until tourney time…so it’s nice to give them some credit.

gonzo20and20camilla

- family alma maters personalize your bracket - have family that went to Purdue or Butler? you best be putting them down to make it to the second round! Family that lives in Boston? Boston College is your choice! Or even if you are like me and your school was a mile away from East Tennessee State, you can choose them too! (although I might not since they are playing a #1 seed….you can still dare to dream!)

- when in doubt- its all in the team colors. – Did you really think I could get away with writing a blog and not apply fashion to the subject? I personally can’t stand UT’s shade of orange. It makes me sick. I do however love Syracuse’s shade of orange and the navy blue and white as an accent (bias? maybe, but it’s still way better than a stadium full of fans wearing Home Depot orange…).  and make note of team jersey styles. I want to strangle the person who thought it was ok to give IU clown warm-up pants. thank goodness they aren’t in the tournament for that very reason. And even though I was only in 6th grade at the time….it still makes me mad….UK should have been disqualified for showing up to the tournament with denim jerseys! yuck!

 university-of-tennessee-postersclown-pantsuk-denim-eww

ewww- nasty-ness!

So there ya have it! SBC’s Bracketology 101! Hope this guide will help you in your bracket choices….and if it doesn’t, at least you had fun filling it out!

Have a wonderful Spring Break week! Go enjoy the weather! I wish I could!

Keep It Rockin!

Birthday thoughts!

2 03 2009

First off- BIG thanks to everyone who left awesome birthday wishes on my facebook page! Y’all ROCK!

So today was the day I was born yay!

 nom-nom

PS me and this cat were meant to be best friends……

If it wasn’t for my parents and today then you wouldn’t be able to read those fabulous fashion blogs yall love! haha. and speaking of fashion blogs!!

So for my birthday (and my mom’s too- her’s is the 5th) we started this tradition for Dad to take mom and I out to eat at a nice restaurant. This year’s choice was the Cheesecake Factory in Greenwood…yummmy big food and cheesecake!

cheesecake

insert me drooling here…..I’ll have one of each please! thanks! :)

ANYWAYS- to kill time before dinner- we walked around Greenwood Mall and stopped in Von Maur. We walked by the shoes and low and behold I saw this….

 brook-shields-dress

Look familiar at all? it should! This is an exact replica (minus the train) of the dress Brooke Shields wore to the Emmy’s Last year!!!

 brook-shields-good1

I was shocked! I’m sure this happens a lot in the fashion world…but this was the first time i ever recognized a copy cat dress from an awards show for prom season. I was excited! and I also just figured out how to upload a picture from my phone to my computer so yay!!

So back to where I was- yeah it’s my birthday today- and one of my favorite things to do is see what else happened today in history…and thanks to wikipedia I will share my findings!

Dr. Seuss was born today!!

seuss2

So I’m totally honored to share my birthday with this great author! hehe. I loved going to elementary school on my birthday because all we did was sit around and read Dr. Seuss books all day. And if I ever became famous and my birthday became a national holiday- I would want schools to continue this tradition. maybe make everyone eat green eggs and ham too. :)

Texas Declared Independence from Mexico today!

According to wikipedia…

Texas Declaration of Independence is signed and the Republic of Texas is declared. David G. Burnet is elected interim president by the delegates in 1836. So Yay Texas! (Acey- I included this fact for you!)

texas

Ben Roethlisberger (aka the great Sasquatch)  was also born today….. blah…

ben-roethlisburgerGood for him for winning the Superbowl, but I’m sorry Steelers fans. I don’t like him. He looks like a giant Sasquatch and he was dumb enough to not wear a helmet while riding his motorcycle. I wish the doctors took advantage of the opportunity to fix his face along with everything else he broke in the accident 2 years ago. I would have!

Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a single game on this day in 1962!

wilt-chamberlain1

Wow! That’s crazy awesome! From wikipedia.com…

“Among others, he is the only player in NBA history to average more than 40 and 50 points in a season or score 100 points in a single NBA game. He also won seven scoring, nine field goal percentage, and eleven rebounding titles, and once even led the league in assists.[3]

And this right here is my favorite fact-toid….

“After his basketball career, Chamberlain played volleyball in the short-lived International Volleyball Association, ….] Chamberlain was also a successful businessman, authored several books and appeared in the movie Conan the Destroyer. He was a lifelong bachelor, but became notorious for his claim to have had sex with 20,000 women, a statement which has entered popular culture.”

I wonder if his love for short shorts had anything to do with the switch to volleyball? hahaha!

And of course other events today include today’s James Bond Daniel Craig’s Birthday, King Kong opens in New York’s Radio City Music Hall, the ban of chloroflorocarbons in Europe in 1989, and the first automatic streetlight is installed in New Milford, Connecticut on this day in 1949.

So yay for today! And to celebrate all these momentous occasions I plan on stuffing my face with red velvet cake! Because calories don’t count on your birthday! :)

14cake450_41

Have a great day yall! Keep it Rockin!

Sara Beth :)

Hey Y’all

26 02 2009

So here I sit at the front desk of QMIX impatiently awaiting the arrival of my prince charming. I long for the day I finally see his handsome physique stroll through the door. His long, curly hair like a halo encompassing his beautiful face. His chest, muscular and hard giving the appearance of an exquiste angel masterfully carved from marble. My eyes tear up as think of the masterpiece that is my love…

All right. All right. Enough trashy romance novel. It’s time for the real scoop. Here’s what happened.

Picture it: An overcast day in late February. One innocent girl sits at her desk. Working diligently as is expected of her. Another girl, the office slacker, meanders over to the computer nearest our dedicated heroine.  The procrastinator pulls up the internet and begins to browse. She visits a sight called wordpress.com with the intention of updating her blog, but notices that someone else is already logged in. Sarabeth3283. With an internal laugh full of malice and ill intent the good-for-nothing clicks the NEW POST button and begins to type…..

What a surprise Miss Sara Beth will get next time she logs in. A mystery! Who could be the loafing QMIXer that just wrote this blog? …..the world may never know….

(psst! Don’t tell, but my initials are B.G.) MWAAHAHAHA!!!!!

Oscar fashion!

23 02 2009

So I have been WAITING for this moment! I’m super excited to bring you this blog! Sure the other award shows are fun for fashion but there’s nothing like the oscars!

As for the actual show I thought it was interesting….I liked the new format of introducing the nominees for best supporting and lead actors and actresses with bringing back past winners. And the montages were most of the part good (LOVED the comedy of 2008 review). I will say the “Musicals are back” number was interesting…I LOVE Baz Lurmann and kudos to him for putting all the music together! I think the casting could have been different- keep hugh jackman (only because he was the host) and the background dancers and singers but scratch Beyonce, Zac, Vanessa, Amanda and whoever her partner was…..they added NOTHING.

Alright- but on to the more important issues from the evening….what everyone was WEARING! So here are some of my favs- both pretty and ugly…

angelina-jolie-nice

Angelina Jolie- Oh my goodness I’m so thankful she didn’t wear a SACK!! See previous blogs for that comentary….but it was simple, elegant, and very Oscar appropriate. True there are other dresses that I love more than this one, but I’m just happy she wore something that fit her!

whoopi-goldberg-what-the-eff

Whoopi Goldberg – Seriously?? What were you thinking?? Whoever told her that it was ok to wear a who lotta leopard print to the Oscars needs to have their head checked out. And no offense, you aren’t a size zero, so the print isn’t going to help you look that way either. and the sunglasses?? unless you are trying to not see everyone’s disgusted look on their face when they see you walking by in that dress leave them in the limo!

oh it just makes me gag looking at it so I’m going to move on before I get sick!

tarji-p-henson-i-love

Tarji P. Henson – I LOVE this dress! I always get nervous when people choose to wear white dresses to events because part of me always thinks they will end up looking like a bride. but this one does not and it looks so great on her! The designer was spot on with making it look light and airy but not to the point where it could look prom tuele (sp?) tacky! Go Benjamin Button’s Mom go!

sophia-loren-ick

Sophia Loren- Sophia- this has nothing to do with you and your career. I consider you one of the greats when it comes to being one of those classic hollywood beauties… with that said…..This I hate. The color reminds me of some tupperware pieces that my mom has from 1974 (no offense mom to your dishware- I’m glad its lasted this long!) and the dress itself looks like it could have been sitting in an attic being eaten by moths the day before. it’s just yucky! throw it back in the attic and let the moths have it!

sarah-jessica-parker-lovely

Sarah Jessica Parker – One word- Lovely! It’s seriously a Cinderella dress for 2009! I think the belt part could have been handled a bit differently, but it gives it that modern edge that keeps it from looking too disney.

reese-witherspoon-eehh

Reese Witherspoon– Ummm…..what were we thinking here? Very dissapointed. The blue is pretty…but I’m confused as to what starts and what stops where.. and I don’t get the straps thing. I’m just confused….and you’re blending into the stage a bit. not the best choice I’m sorry.

phillip-seymour-hoffman-no-hats-allowed

Phillip Seymour Hoffman- Now I usually don’t critique men because they have it easy and all they have to do is wear a nice well fitted tux and they are good to go. Some however think it’s ok to step out of that box. Phil here is one of them. I’m sorry Phil- you are wrong. Leave the beret at home for your Bob Ross moments…don’t bring it along for your Academy Award Moments.

penelope-cruz-is-getting-married

Penelope Cruz- Do I hear wedding bells somewhere? Where is the cake? Oh wait nevermind. Apparently Penelope confused her Academy Award invite for a wedding invite….and wanted to show up the bride by wearing white (side fashion note….never ever wear white to someones wedding unless it is specifically asked by the bride and groom!)

And here is a classic case of a white dress looking like a wedding dress. nuff said. It’s pretty but save it for the isle.

nicole-kidman-huh

Nicole Kidman – She is almost becoming my next Angelina Jolie- one of those gorgeous actresses that should be stunning us on the red carpet but then they make choices like this and I wonder WHY?? I know Hollywood is in love with the Obamas….but that doesn’t give anyone the right to try to copy Michelle Obama’s inaugural ballgown!

natalie-portman-prom-starwars-esque

Natalie Portman- Its a pretty color, but I feel like this could have been pulled from the Star Wars Prequel’s costume closet. Is a Star Wars 2.5 in the making? All we need is a funky fake hair wig and we are set! I’m sure Jar Jar is looking for something to do….

miley-cyrus-as-a-fish

Miley Cyrus- So apparently things at Disney are getting rough…because they are now subjecting their factory produced childstars to also be Disney characters. And here Miley must have just gotten off her shift of portraying the Little Mermaid herself Ariel!

OR- she wanted to pull a Scarlet O-Hara/Gone with the Wind thing and make a dress out of all the fancy placemats and tablecloths from her Nash-Vegas Mansion!

OR! maybe Disney is doing an underwater remake of Gone with the wind and this is one of the costumes!!

I choose the last option, but whatever the reasoning….it’s ugly.

kate-winslet-eehh

Kate Winslet- Yay congrats to her for winning best actress! I’m not completely crazy about this dress though. I’ve seen way worse, but I’ve also seen way better. Still love ya Kate and everything you do!

jessica-biel-just-rolled-out-of-bed

Jessica Biel- OK I have a theory about this mess……

She was lounging in sweats with her sweetie Justin Timberlake and as they were casually channel surfing the red carpet interviews come across the screen. She suddenly yells Oh SNAP! I have to be there to talk about animation stuff! and jt is all say wha?? but it didn’t matter. she jumps off the couch and races around to try to get herself ready but she didn’t have anything to wear so she ran over to Eva Mendes house to borrow her last awards dress that was unfortunately at the bottom of the laundry pile. that didn’t matter though. she raced and got dressed, grabed the limo and did her hair and makeup in there (since her lipstick was a bit joker-esque) and made it just in time to be the sloppiest dressed of the night.

The end.

jennifer-aniston-gorgeous

Jennifer Aniston – I really hope Brad was doing a double take at Jennifer when he saw her in this dress!! She looked so pretty! Way to rock it and look better than Angelina!

heidi-klum-tried-sewing-herself

Heidi Klum- Another fun story!

Heidi has been going through Postpartum Project Runway depression and so she decided she was going to create her own gown so she can rate herself on the runway. She obiviously did well at Mood for choosing a fabulous fabric, but unfortunately there’s more to constructing a dress than just wrapping it around yourself and hoping for the best. I’m sorry, Seal and your children may have thought you were in….but I say you are OUT!

freida-pinto-not-as-awkward-but-kinda-ugly

Frieda Pinto – ” Hi…I’m Frieda….I’m not as awkward as before…..this is my third award show….but I’m still kinda awkward……see my grandma sleve?…..it makes this dress awkward…..I just didn’t want to disappoint my awkward fans…..thanks!”

evan-rachel-wood-is-a-ghost

Evan Rachel Wood – And now a conversation overheard on the carpet…..

” whoa….what was that? is that a ghost over there? oh snap it looks like a naked ghost! Is that even allowed here?…oh wait…..no that’s just Evan Rachel Wood.”

OK- either go get a spray tan or choose a dress that’s not the same shade of your pastey whiteness.

beyonce-a-no-no

Beyonce Knowles- I don’t know what was funnier from last night….this dress or watching the musical number with my mom and laughing at how too bootylicious she looked in the red thing she was wearing. I think it’s a tie.

I bet if she was standing next to the statue behind her people might get her confused with Mr. Oscar.

anne-hathaway-pretty

Anne Hathaway – And finally we have another pretty dress that I love! And she did the glitter tastefully too. Also- something that has nothing to do with the dress….I loved how she cheered when Kate Winslet won Best actress when she was up for that same award! That was too cool!

zac-efron-as-pee-wee-herman

Zac Efron- 3 words….Pee Wee Herman.

adriene-brody-needs-a-haircut

Adrian Brody- Everytime the camera shot him I about gagged. I’m sorry. This is nasty. He looked better in the Summer of Sam than he does right here! You know how when you were young and they taught you in kindergarten to stay away from strangers? He looks like the stranger I always pictured in my head….and I’m sure I had nightmares about him too.

so in short-wash and cut the hair, shave the face and go take a shower. please. that’s all we ask.

Your Perfect Valentine’s Day Guide for 2009!

11 02 2009

So yeah Valentine’s day isn’t until Saturday…. but the Friday before is an even better day! And no I’m not talking about scary Friday the 13th….

jason-eww

it’s our annual Love Songs for Love Chapel Day!

hug

Aawwww!!!

It’s the day that we throw out the typical QMIX playlist (I know how dare they treat my hard work! ;) ) and for a minimum $10 pledge we will play your song request and dedication.

This is I think one of the coolest gifts you could give anyone for Valentines Day…I mean if you think about it…flowers are nice but they are only going to last for so long (unless your sweetie was smart enough to give you a potted plant), and chocolates…though if you buy the right brand they are amazing (Godiva, See’s, Ghiradelli are top notch) but any other may send bad body image messages to the female folk.

And if you dare give any chocolate to the QMIX ladies now during our Tipton Lakes Athletic Club Fitness Challenge….we might flip out (i’ll still eat the chocolate- but I will just feel more guilty about it).

SO! What to do?? Love Songs for Love Chapel! Hey- we all know the economy has seen better days- so everyone is watching how every penny is spent. Every single part of your pledge is going straight to Love Chapel- which helps folks with emergency food needs and some financial assistance here in Bartholomew County. For more info about them you can call (812) 372-9421.

Now once you have decided to enter a dedication and pledge $10 (a very smart choice if I may say so myself… J) but you want something ORIGINAL and UNIQUE for your honey bunches of oats…..sure we can’t get enough of Edwin McCain’s I’ll Be or Lonestar’s Amazed….but those have been overplayed so much and you want your dedication to stand out!

Well, I have gone through part of my music collection and found some not-so-known Love Songs that I’m sure your sweetie will go crazy for! And All of these will be available Friday thanks to the provision of my ipod.

Secondhand Serenade- “Your Call”: I would recommend pretty much anything by him….but this one I love! I will only put it on loan though just this once to you….This one is pretty special to me and I lay a lot of claim on it.

Making April- “These Are The Nights”: If your favorite memory of your sweetheart was that one night from your beach vacation in jersey- this one is for you!! Haha- it’s a great song either way.

Dashboard Confessional- “Hands Down”: I’m sure you can remember the nerves from your first kiss with your current flame! And this one is also only on loan….so sorry.

Goot- “I Love Your Existence”: The title pretty much explains the song. And how could you NOT love a band with the name Goot?

Ron Pope- “A Drop in the Ocean”: I just discovered this guy thanks to my sweetie….all of his stuff is awesome- and this one is just my favorite of the favorites.

Angels and Airwaves -”Everything’s Magic”: A perfect song to tell your loved one how everything is magical when they are around with a slight techno rock pop twist…and if it sounds familiar yes it’s Tom from Blink-182…which I guess is back together?

Ben Folds- “The Luckiest”: Yes the verses are kinda weird lyrically…but none-the-less it’s a great song to tell someone how lucky you are to have them in your life.

Coldplay- “Sparks”: We all love Coldplay, and even though some of their songs can be “overplayed” this one never made the radio waves in the US and a perfect candidate for Love Songs for Love Chapel.

Copeland- “You Have My Attention”: Just a lovely song….and a great way guys to let your girl know that “yes- I really am paying attention to you!” (they may not be listening per-say…hehe just kidding guys!)

David Gray- “You’re The World to Me”: I love David Gray. He’s awesome….and so is this song. So say no to Tony Braxton’s “You Mean the World to Me” and opt for this one. (I’m sorry- Tony Braxton just gets on my nerves)

Foo Fighters – “Everlong”: Who can resist those that are fighting foo!?! It’s a necessary cause! Hehe- ok for realsies…a sweet love song from a band that would rather tell ya how you cause them acne problems (Breakout) and their need to acquire aviation skills (Learn to Fly). Plus it’s fun to play on Guitar Hero World Tour!

Katy Perry – “Thinking of You”: Not so much a straight up love song…but if you were in a situation where you ended it with someone and started dating someone else but wanted to tell your ex you still think about them…this is your song.

Live – “Dance with You”: If you like extravagant lyrics filled with stories of Gods and stars and sand and dancing then look no further!

One Republic- “Won’t Stop”: It’s one of the few straight love songs off their debut album….the rest are mostly about breaking up.

The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus – “Your Guardian Angel”: Another song I love! Turns me into a puddle of goo whenever I hear it…so I will apologize now if it gets played during my shift and I can’t talk much afterwards because I’m recovering from goo-iness

Skillet- “Yours to Hold”: This song is for that crush that you have on your best friend but you just can’t get the nerve to let them know how you feel because of extenuating circumstances….kinda like a “Jim and Pam” relationship before they actually got together J

Spill Canvas- “Lullaby”: Just another sweet song about the gentle subtle actions that never get noticed but that make us girly girls go awwwww!!!!

Yellowcard- “Dear Bobbie”: Fabulous choice for those that have loved each other for a super long time and will continue to do so until the day they die. I love the letter that is read throughout the song…it’s too sweet!

So there you have it! A small list of not-so-known songs that express the same love as those that are insanely popular today. If you want your own copy of the songs above, on my personalities page I will post a playlist of all these songs where you can hear :30 sec samples.

Well no matter what you dedicate for your love song I just hope you do so! And who knows-maybe I’ll match someone during my shift if one of these songs gets played….you gotta listen Friday though!!

Have a great day! Keep it Rockin yall!
